Sharing the love of God is about communication. Because of this, learning the language(s) used in Uganda and being able to use the language well is a high priority for mission staff.
Short-term missionaries may need to study a language, depending on their assignment. In both instances, the cost of language study must be in the missionary’s budget. Costs will vary. The specific language you will study depends on your location in ministry.
You can ask your Field Director what language you will be required to learn. Formal language studies generally last for the first 4 months you are on the field. Each missionary is expected to fulfill the requirements of his language course and receive a passing mark. This includes attending classes unless he/she is sick, completing all examinations, going on scheduled field trips, etc. See the financial section of this manual for information about charges related to language study. |
