Missionary Disciples

Sharing the love of God is about communication.  Because of this, learning the language(s) used in Uganda and being able to use the language well is a high priority for mission staff.

oh_no_250_1Language study is required and will be arranged for career missionaries. Usually this will be their first assignment, but may be deferred until later depending on the work needs.

Short-term missionaries may need to study a language, depending on their assignment.

In both instances, the cost of language study must be in the missionary’s budget.  Costs will vary.

There are more than 43 languages in Uganda. The 3 official languages of the country are Kiswahili, Luganda and English.

The specific language you will study depends on your location in ministry.

  • In Kampala, you would study Luganda.
  • In Arua and most outlying areas, it would (or could) be Kiswahili, although another language may be a better option depending on your specific location.

You can ask your Field Director what language you will be required to learn. Formal language studies generally last for the first 4 months you are on the field.

Each missionary is expected to fulfill the requirements of his language course and receive a passing mark.  This includes attending classes unless he/she is sick, completing all examinations, going on scheduled field trips, etc.

See the financial section of this manual for information about charges related to language study.
